On a happier note, my first semester is now over and I have a few days off to relax and spend some quality time with my family! Semester exams are over with and grades have been entered...I will, of course, have to do some lesson planning while I'm off, but...not tonight! ;)
I hope next semester goes by smoothly as well. I feel much more comfortable in my position now, but am still figuring things out and coming up with different ways to do things if I remain in the same position next school year.
If you're the praying type, please continue to pray for me as well as the multitudes of others who work in our nations schools. It's not as easy as 'Joe Public' thinks it is!
Merry Christmas!

Tragedy
I am wary this morning (the first day back to school after the terrible tragedy in CT) to send my kids (and myself) back to school. What is this world coming to when a parent can't rely on the fact that their child will return safely to their arms at the end of the school day? I'm not here to point fingers or lay blame, but somethings gotta give! Every educator, administrator, and assistant I know would, without hesitation, do whatever it took to protect their students! And that fact makes me proud to be an educator! But in this day and age, in this country, the schools should not be a war zone!! I am not fully educated on the whys and hows of what happened, but to be perfectly honest, I don't even care! I just don't want to dread going to work or dropping my own children off at school for fear of what may happen... Prayers go out to every parent, child, and school employee this morning.

A good day at school
This is why I love my job! My kids are shown demonstrating what we learned this week in Geometry! :)
Thanks for continuing to support me while I do what I love through the ups and downs!!

I'm a 3
After stressing for weeks and spending countless hours on a lesson plan for an evaluation lesson (that my administrator did not even observe, but still rated me on) it has been determined that I'm average... Bummer!
How ludicrous is it that we, as teachers, have been reduced to this??
That is all for now!

FALL BREAK!!
Ok, I survived midterms and now we're on Fall Break!! However, when we go back to school, I will be getting evaluated for the first time! :/ I'm nervous! The evaluation system in our state is C-R-A-Z-Y so it's going to be stressful! On the plus side, I'll have it out of the way and won't have to worry about it for a little while.
Keep praying for me!!

P/T Conferences
I survived my first 'Open House' last night! :) From my prior experience, I was afraid that no one would come (besides the fact that the open house was not very well advertised). But I had quite a few parents show up and all of the meetings went really well. All of the parents I met were very supportive and I feel like I can call on them if it's ever necessary. (Of course, it's usually the good kids whose parents come...lol!) Anyway, we're halfway through the first grading period, and all seems to be going well. I am, however, really looking forward to Fall Break in a few weeks!
Thanks for checking in!

I'm lovin' it!
In honor of Patriot day, I read 'The Little Chapel that Stood' to all of my classes today and shared some facts about 9/11/01 and its aftermath. Afterward, I had the students write one new thing that they had learned today on a post-it note and stick it to my door. Viola! This is the result! I'm so proud!
I have yet to encounter that overwhelmed feeling, but I really wish I could get in my groove and teach how I want to teach...I'm still kind of walking on eggshells and trying to do what the last teacher did and not step on anyones toes...and to be perfectly honest, I've just been lazy so far and that's just totally not like me! I'm hoping that as I get more comfortable with the school, the staff and the students, I will be able to take some risks and plan lessons the way I know I can...
Anyway, for whoever may be reading this, keep on praying!! Thanks!! :)
'Til next time!

a day in the life...
I really wish I could stop thinking about school and things to do with school and things I need to do for school...It's SATURDAY for Pete's sake!! I'm giving myself a headache! lol!
On a positive note, I survived my first two full weeks of teaching, my first two football games, my first assembly, my first pep rally and my first IEP meeting... I think I'm on a roll!
However, I am already looking forward to Fall Break in October!

I'm settled in and survived the first full day of teaching!
It's hard to tell from these cell phone pics, but my classroom is all set up and decorated and is hopefully engaging and inspiring! :) I made it through my first full day and besides being a little frustrated at a few lazy students, it went really well!
Keep those prayers coming! I will need all the help I can get all year!!

Inservice, inservice, and more inservice...
This whole getting a job thing has been hectic! (Not that I'm complaining!) I am excited to have a job and am very much looking forward to getting started! I think I'm going to love my new school and all the people I get to work with :) (I hope they love me back lol!) I have been inserviced to death the last few days, and hope I can make some real progress in my classroom the next few days! I will have to spend my weekend with my nose in the books to start planning lessons... I really am excited! I hope this excited feeling sticks around and doesn't get replaced by an overwhelmed feeling! I am going to try my best to stay upbeat and positive and not let the potentially overwhelming parts of my job get me down. Hopefully I can post some new pics tomorrow or Friday...I really have made some progress in the room, but still have quite a bit to do.
Stay tuned...

Lots of work to do!
Ok, so here's what I have to work with...It's hard to know what to do with it yet because I'm not sure exactly how resource works down there. In my former classroom, it worked well to have the room set up to accommodate small groups, but if I'm doing whole-group instruction this year, that probably won't work. At any rate...I can't let it look like this when students arrive next week, so I am just going to spruce it up a bit and then I can always rearrange it if I see it isn't working out. I will post more pics later!

FINALLY!!
Ok faithful reader(s)...I FINALLY got a job offer today! I am going to be doing SPED again this year, but this time at the high school level rather than the middle school one... I definitely think I named my blog correctly 'cause this certainly is going to be an adventure! Thank you so much for supporting me, please continue to do so as I embark on this new adventure at a new school in a new county!!

Interview Queen
I've decided that with 12+ interviews under my belt for this school year that I should start giving interviewing lessons...Only, who would take them from me? (Seeing as how none of the aforementioned interviews have resulted in a job...yet) :(
Anyway, another one yesterday, and again today...and yet another one scheduled for Thursday...Please keep the prayers coming my way! I know there's a job out there for me, and I know I need to be patient, but when the pressures of the world (mortgage, car payments, utilities, school supplies for the kids etc) are weighing on me, it's difficult to have blind faith without being nervous for the future...Hopefully I'll have good news to report soon!

Dream
Ok, so last night I had a dream that I was hired back at my former school to teach 6th grade...This is the first time since this whole roller-coaster job hunt started that I have had a dream about getting a job...and for it to be that specific (grade and school) makes me wonder if someone is trying to tell me something...I will keep praying! Hopefully this is a premonition of good things to come and not just wishful thinking on my part!

Patience
I think God is trying to teach me a lesson in patience. I am VERY nervous at this point... I will get 2 paychecks in July, then nothing! I have GOT TO FIND A JOB!!! This is yet another one of those things they don't teach you in college...what to do if the job market sucks! GGGRRR!! Sorry to have been so negative...I keep hoping I will have some positive news to report, but so far it's not in the cards for me :(

still waiting...
I had an interview yesterday...I think it went well, but getting a job has become so 'political' (for lack of a better word) in this town, I don't think it even matters how the interview went! :(
I also got word that my position from last year which was available, has now been filled...I'm so bummed! I guess I better start looking in earnest for a job outside my field since I only have two paychecks left on this school year and the prospects are looking grim for me getting a teaching job for the upcoming year! :(
Well, again, sorry this blog has not turned out to be as helpful as I had hoped. It's really sad that men and women pour their hearts and souls into becoming educators and then end up working at Wal-Mart or wherever...

Frustrated!
I was REALLY hoping to not have to be in this position again this summer! There are very limited jobs available in this county and copious amounts of people applying for them. And as if that isn't bad enough, today I found out four people got jobs...yay for them, but that is depressing for me! I'm feeling a little at this point like I wasted my time going back to college! I had a 'good' job before I decided to go back to school, and now I'm up a creek without a paddle. :(
Frustrated is putting it mildly I'm afraid!
Praying that something positive happens soon before I have a nervous breakdown!
Keep those thoughts/prayers coming!
Hopefully I'll have good news to report soon!

Cautiously Optimistic
Another (2) interview(s) down! I am really hoping and praying that something comes up. I cannot bear the thought of being unemployed! I am not a very patient watier either! Anyway, the interviews I've had have gone well, so hopefully someone chooses me to join their faculty (soon!).
Just thought I would give a little update!

1 down...? to go
Ok, I survived my first interview! This was the first time I have interviewed for a job in an 'urban' school! I walked in and there were 7 people around a table with pages of questions in front of them! It was rather intimidating I must admit! But I had a good time and I think they liked me. I'm not to the point yet where I am ready to move the family down the mountain or commute an hour and a half to work each day, but I'm glad to know (or think) that I can 'run with the big dogs' (so to speak) and not get chewed up and spit out! :)
Anyway I have an interview for a local SPED job next Thursday, so there's still hope that I'll get another job here for next year. I was just a tiny bit impressed that out of all of the people who probably applied online that they even bothered to call me from the 'urban school'...
That's all for now, I'll check in and let y'all know how the next one goes! Keep on praying or sending positive thoughts or whatever it is you've been doing, because it's apparently working so far!!

On the hunt...(for a job)
Well, I have had a pretty productive weekend! I have applied in about 8 counties in my state and 3 out of state.
I actually got a call for an interview in one of the counties Friday...SOOOO...I kinda hope it doesn't come down to moving or commuting to be employed, but I have certainly done my part to find a job! Anyway, again, I'm asking for your thoughts/prayers for something positive to happen. I am open to whatever God has in store for me!
I'll keep ya posted!

And that's the way the cookie crumbles...
Well, I unexpectedly got a job in the middle of the year, and now I unexpectedly lost said job. :(
I was told this morning that the job I currently hold would be posted for next school year. This is not the end of the world, it's something that happens to new teachers. I don't really think it is a reflection on me or that I did a bad job. But, they hastily hired someone in the middle of the year because someone quit, and now they want to take their time and see who's out there that's qualified... I am sad because I got on at the school I really wanted to work at, and now I have to start over from square one. (Including moving my son to a new school.)
So, if you pray, please send a prayer up for me that I will be able to secure a teaching job for next school year and embark on a new adventure!

17 days and counting!
The countdown has begun! It is standardized testing time! All the teachers and administrators are stressed to the max and the students are like caged animals longing for freedom!
Not saying that my job is horrible, but it has definitely been a learning experience for me! I think everyone just needs a break! Fortunately that break will come in a few short weeks in the form of summer!!
I hope to find out soon what my placement will be for next school year so I can spend some time preparing.
Again, just wanted to check in and let y'all know that I'm still plugging along...

The life of a first year teacher...
Wow! I have been B-U-S-Y!!
Luckily I have (almost) survived my first (half) year as a (SPED) teacher!! I look forward to many more! I complain about different aspects of my job from time to time, but overall I have loved it and am learning a lot!
I am, however, looking forward to SUMMER!!
I just wanted to stop by and check in in case any of you thought I might have fallen off of a cliff or something. Sorry I have not been as helpful as I had intended to be, but if nothing else, this has be cathartic for me!
To quote Tigger..."Ta Ta For Now!"

Our first severe weather day
The weather has been horrible where I live recently. Today, we had to go on 'lockdown' and ultimately ended up closing the county schools down early so that the students wouldn't be on school buses when the next round of storms hits. It was so difficult to see these kids crying and scared all the while hoping that my own kids were ok and being unable to comfort them. Overall, everyone behaved well and did what they were supposed to do. We got everyone out of there quickly, so hopefully everyone has a safe place to go if we get what we're supposed to this afternoon/evening! Never a dull moment!

Another week...
Another week is almost finished. I talked to another teacher yesterday who graduated from college with me. Surprisingly, this really encouraged me. I hate to hear of others struggling, but in this case, I was happy to know that it's not just a SPED thing to be stressed out. Even though the struggles are different, she, too is having a difficult time adjusting to her first year of teaching. I don't know if I consciously thought that if I was a regular ed teacher that I wouldn't be so stressed out, but anyway, after talking to her, I realize teachers are pretty much stressed out across the board right now. I still think I would like to move to regular ed next year and plan on taking the pre-k licensure test next month to broaden my range of qualification. But I am getting better at my job and dealing better with the stresses that come with it. I love (most) of my students and wish SPED could be more about them than worrying about compliance and paperwork. So, I'm just going to keep on keeping on for now...Wish me luck!

Feelin' Better!
Ok, so after a long weekend away, I'm feeling a little more 'with it' this week. (Although my record for parent attendance at IEP meetings hasn't improved!)
Contrary to what some of you might believe based on my prior posts, I really do love my job! It's easy to get discouraged, but I still believe it is worth it!
No major drama has occurred yet this week, so that's a refreshing change of pace! Teens and pre-teens can be trying at best, so the fact that we are going into Thursday without any major issues yet this week is a definite plus!!
Anyhoo, off to do paperwork, paperwork, and more paperwork!! Ta-Ta For Now!! :)

The wind has been knocked out of my sails
Good thing we've been studying idioms this week...
I don't really know what to say without disclosing too much information, but the title of today's blog pretty much sums up how I'm feeling this week! Luckily my hubby and I are going away for the long weekend, so maybe I'll come back rejuvenated.
My faith in the goodness of everybody and my happy go lucky 'everything happens for a reason' outlook have been trampled this week. Hopefully I can snap myself out of this funk.
For now, I have one more day of actual school and a day of inservice to endure before the relaxing can begin. So, I guess I better get to work on some IEPs I have meetings about next week so I don't have any work 'stuff' to worry about while we're gone.
Sorry to be such a 'Debby downer'. Hopefully next time you check in with me my world will be righted and I'll be ready to carry on with my usual optimism.

Waste of a perfectly good snow day!
Sooo...it FINALLY snowed!! Too bad it started AFTER school on Friday and will be gone by Monday!! I had a pretty good week at school this week. I feel like I'm getting the hang of things most days, but every now and then I feel like: "Oh my goodness! I don't have a clue what's going on!!"
There has been an interesting development at school, but until something happens (or doesn't happen) I won't jinx myself by saying it out loud. But if you're one of those people praying for me, God knows the situation and I trust that what is supposed to happen will. :)
Well, we're off to get donuts in the snow! Will keep you posted of any interesting developments as they occur!

Yes, I'm still alive!
Although, the last few days have been hectic, I'm still plugging along. I really hope we get some time off for snow soon! The 'natives' are getting restless at school! Seeing as how we get no Spring Break to speak of, the only hope for some time off is the white stuff!! But...it's not looking good for us! Even though the groundhog saw his shadow, we've been having unseasonably warm weather recently so snow is highly unlikely!!
I think I'm getting better at the paperwork side of my job, and I am still enjoying the time I get to spend in the classroom. I am, however, hopeful that I will be able to move into a regular ed classroom for next school year. I am just not used to dealing with all of this stress. I know being in a regular classroom is stressful too, but I think my schooling and student teaching experiences have prepared me more for that type of stress. (Not so much for the kind I'm currently facing!)
So, if any of my (two or three) readers were worried if I'd fallen off the face of the earth...this is me, checking in! I'm still here, plugging along, learning as I go, doing the best I can. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers!
That's all for now!

half-n-half
Today, I am half proud of myself and half frustrated! I managed to get all of my progress reports done and printed and my monthly report done and turned in...Here's where the frustrated part comes in...I've been a SPED teacher for what? 4 weeks? I got NO HELP on either of these things! Not for lack of trying, but because the people that swore they wouldn't leave me flapping in the breeze did exactly that...Maybe I didn't give them enough time to respond, but ggggrrrr!!
I still have another report to do, but on top of being sick and dealing with the state writing assessment and a school full of subs today, I just don't have the energy to try to figure it out on my own right now. Granted, I'm a smart cookie and don't mind figuring things out on my own, but I don't appreciate being told that I would have all of this support only to find when I actually need it, I have NONE!
If you're wondering what a school full of subs has to do with anything...the kids are HORRIBLE when their regular teacher is not there!!! So if you can imagine a school full of TERRIBLE kids, then you know how my day went!
On the bright side, this week is almost over! :)
Peace out!

SICK!!
Ok, I didn't expect this to happen, but I guess all the germies floating around the elementary school environment have taken a liking to me. The good news is, I overcame my stubborn, bull-headedness and took myself to the doctor! So, after filling FOUR...yes, you read that right...FOUR prescriptions, I am hoping to be on the road to recovery sooner rather than later.
I felt totally miserable today, but somehow made it through and even had a somewhat productive day. I am a little daunted by all of the end of the month reports and progress reports that are due in the next few days, (With the state writing assessment thrown in there for good measure!) but I'm sure I'll get through them just like I've gotten through everything else so far.
Where is that darn snow anyway!?!?
Well, this cough-syrup-upped teacher is gonna hit the sack! I hope between the cough syrup and antibiotics and whatnot that tomorrow will be a more bearable day! Night!! :)

I can see the light!!
Ok, I have (almost) survived my first full 5 day week of teaching! Between the bus duty days, faculty meeting, and parent-teacher conference, I have logged A LOT of hours at school this week! I don't know if I've ever been so glad for it to be coming up on FRIDAY!! :) Now, if only it was 30 degrees outside instead of 50...Then I could pray for a SNOW DAY to end this L-O-N-G and tiring week!
In all seriousness though, I am thoroughly enjoying my job, and even though I'm exhausted, it is a good exhausted if ya know what I mean!? I didn't even get much accomplished this week because of benchmark testing, but I still feel proud of myself for getting through it. I had several IEP meetings, the parent-teacher conferences went well, and I handled myself with decorum when I was flipped off by an eighth grader...Please don't ever believe anyone if they tell you that teaching is easy!
Well, this exhausted teacher is going to crash into my big comfy bed so I will be well-rested and ready to face whatever tomorrow has in store!
Til next time...

HIVES!! (not literally!)
Just thinking about my schedule this week is enough to give a person hives! (or an ulcer)...Today: IEP meeting (which the parents did not attend), read benchmark test to 6th graders, Tomorrow: TWO IEP meetings, read benchmark test to 6th & 8th graders, bus duty, Wednesday: IEP meeting, continue reading benchmark test to 6th & 8th graders, bus duty, faculty meeting, Thursday: continue reading benchmarks, parent teacher conferences, Friday: make up benchmark tests...
PHEW! Makes me tired just typing it!
However, I got an amazing compliment from my mentor today, so that gave me a little boost of confidence! I'm not one of those people that you have to coddle and give praise to all the time, but I am like any 'typical' person and like to know where I stand from time to time. Especially since I am new and am constantly wondering if I'm actually doing all of this right or if I'm just flying by the seat of my pants and nobody's noticed yet!
So, I have not drowned in a sea of paperwork yet (or had a nervous breakdown/panic attack) so I figure I must be doing something right! :)
Keep those prayers/positive thoughts coming my way!

Busy, Busy, Busy!!!
Well, I had another IEP meeting which the parent didn't show up to today. (This is the same one that didn't show last week.) I've been told to get used to that! Anyway...my paperwork (halfway) showed up for my student who moved in from out of state, so I now get to input him into the "easy' IEP system online. Next week is going to be crazy trying to administer benchmarks, and I just got told today that we're going to be down another assistant. So, the job that 6 people were doing before Christmas has to be done by 4 people now...???? How is that supposed to work again? Maybe we need to clone ourselves!
So, I guess I better get to work! Will check in again soon! If you're a pray-er, prayers would be appreciated about now!! :)

Teachers LOVE Snow Days!
It was so funny at school Thursday...with the threat of snow on the horizon, the teachers were so hyped up for Friday to be a snow day! It seemed like the students could really care less either way, but every teacher I saw in the hall was doing the snow dance or crossing their fingers in hopes that school would be called off! :) (myself included of course!) Anyway, we got our wish! So now, as the four day weekend comes to a close, I suppose I better get busy writing lesson plans and preparing for upcoming meetings!
This is the stressful time of year to be a teacher what with all of the state mandated testing and evaluations going on...I just hope I can keep my head above water and come out the other side!
Until next time...
Ciao!

4 Day Weekend!!
Yay! Tomorrow is a snow day and Monday is Martin Luther King day, so we get a 4 day weekend!! I got a loaner computer from the SPED department so that's a bonus! In our classroom, we have two teachers and two assistants and one computer, so...this should relieve some of the computer congestion! Anyway...since I just picked it up today...maybe...I will try to do some work this weekend! ;)
I'm really starting to get a hang of my schedule and getting to know my students, so that is making things easier. Unfortunately, there is a LOT of state mandated testing going on (and coming up) so that messes with what I'm able to get accomplished right now.
I got a new student from another state, and am struggling to get the parent to sign a records release form so that I can get his file!! I guess that's just another frustration I'm going to have to deal with. So, just as I thought, this job is going to be a learning experience for me! But, I'm enjoying it so far and think that as soon as I get into my groove that I'll be good at it! (Hopefully that will happen soon!)
Anyway, I'm off to enjoy the fact that I can stay up late and sleep in in the morning!

Whoa! I can see how easily people get overwhelmed!!
I attended my first IEP meeting today...the parents, however, did not. So...now we get to try it again next week. Anyhow...today we scheduled 4 or 5 meetings for the next two weeks! Holy cow! I'm glad I only manage 1 6th grade and 7th & 8th grades! If you had to manage the whole school, all you would ever do is hold/re-schedule (and get ready for) meetings! Geesh!
Anyway, I am still really enjoying my job, but need to really focus and be sure to not let it overwhelm me and take over my life.

Monday...
Nothing much to report today. I turned in my lesson plans, so we'll see how that went when I get them back! I had to monitor a lot of reading/math testing today, so it was a pretty laid back day. I LOVE the school I'm at and the people I work with, so that's good! Hopefully we'll get all the paperwork, username/password, technicality type stuff out of the way this week so that I won't have to continue to go to someone else to look something up for me or print off a report etc. I did get my caseload switched over to me from the previous teacher finally. So now I have 24 of my very own students to monitor, do progress reports for, update IEPs and hold meetings for!
Overall, all is well for now!
Stay tuned!!

Lesson Plans...
Ok, so I've written lesson plans before (obviously), but how exactly does one go about writing lesson plans for different grades/subjects? My schedule has me 30 mins here and an hour there...all over the school all day long teaching different subjects to different grade levels! My job is to help the students with what they're struggling with. I don't necessarily know what that is until I get into that specific classroom with that specific student... Anyway... here I go, leaping over my first hurdle! Lesson plans are supposed to be turned in to be checked by the principal/vice-principal on Monday mornings, so we'll see if they understand the convoluted way I have my plans written...If not, I will find a different way to do them next week! :)

First week! (kind of)
I SURVIVED!! Yay! Even though we had one snow day and one abbreviated day, I feel a sense of accomplishment after my first week on the job! If I can remain organized and maintain positive working relationships with my colleagues, I think I will be in good shape. The SPED staff is wonderful and I have lots of support so I don't feel like I'm floundering like I feared I might. I can already tell who my challenging students are, but I am ready to take them on!
I have lots of work to do this weekend to get ready to hit the ground running next week! For those of you who pray, keep me in your prayers and pray that I can do the best possible job for each of my students and remain true to myself.

First Day (For Real)
Today was really great! I am looking forward to working with these teachers and students for the rest of the school year. I think the range of content I get to teach and the ability levels of my students is really going to keep my job interesting. I am going to try my best to stay upbeat and positive and not let the negativity swirling around my profession get me down. I love what I do and I look forward to doing it! Am I going to have a bad day from time to time? You bet! But hopefully those bad days will just strengthen my resolve to be the best that I can be. (Yea, I know, I sound like the Army slogan!) Anyway, I almost did my full schedule today so I am getting a feel for how my days are going to go. I am going to have to become super organized to keep up with what all is going on all the time though! Right now I have a legal pad full of random notes in different colored pens! Hopefully, as with any job, I will get in a groove and get the routine down and everything won't seem so hectic! Anyway, between now and then, maybe I can entertain you with my adventures!

1st day-Take two!
So, on my second attempt at a first day we were on a two hour delay schedule and I had a 3 hour meeting at the BOE office. I can tell my first few days/weeks will be hectic and it will take some time to get into the routine, but I was really excited to meet the Language Arts teacher I'll be working with. She suggested that we team teach, and I couldn't be happier about it! I REALLY look forward to it! I'm sure that I will enjoy spending one on one time with my students and working with small groups, but I am SO GLAD that I will get to teach in a whole group setting as well.
Anyway, I can't wait to dive in and get started! Will keep y'all posted on my adventures!!

1st day=SNOW DAY! :)
This is what it takes for there to be no school in my county! :) Well, I guess we'll try for my first day again tomorrow!

Tomorrow's the day!!
Well, over the last week, I've done as much as I can do to prepare for my first day as a Special Ed teacher. I am really looking forward to it! I have a training meeting for most of the day tomorrow, so it won't truly feel like a real first day, AND it is SNOWING outside! In our neck of the woods, snow on the ground usually means no school, so we'll just have to wait and see!
I am excited to meet my students and get to know the faculty at my new school. I am also very excited about teaching at the school where my son attends too!
Anyway, I'll keep ya posted! Wish me luck!! :)
